Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Ct.) became the 50th vote against Donald Trump’s Education Secretary nominee, Betsy Devos. Vice President Mike Pence cast the deciding vote in his role as president of the Senate. Pence’s tiebreaker vote is the first time in US history that a vice president has been called upon to break a tie on a confirmation.
Republican senators Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine) broke ranks to vote with Democrats against Ms. DeVos’ nomination.
Ms. DeVos is confirmed by the Senate and becomes the new Secretary of Education.
