Uh Oh. DeVos Is In Trouble, But GOP Leaders Have a Fix

Two Republican Senators have withdrawn their support for Department of Education nominee Betsy DeVos.

Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said they will not vote to confirm DeVos.

Collins said “I simply cannot support her confirmation,” from the Senate floor.

This is troubling, and if all Democrats vote against the nomination, the tie will be broken by Vice President Mike Pence.

To counter any possible defections, Senate GOP leadership has shuffled the voting schedule (according to Roll Call) to put DeVos first, before Sessions, who is a shoe-in for confirmation. That way, Sessions will be able to vote for DeVos. A smart move.

DeVos is an excellent pick. The GOP should not let this one slide.
