10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2001). (2 Sa 7:10–13). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
David wants to build a house for God, but God tells David through the Prophet Nathan that David is not to build God a house. Instead, God will build David a house.
Consider though the word play. David wants to build God an actual house, or a temple. God, instead, says that he will build David a dynasty. And not only a dynasty, but an eternal dynasty. A descendant of David will sit on the throne forever.
You and I often have dreams and wishes. We want a big house. We want a nice paycheck. We want comfort. We want material things. Not only do we want them, but we want God to provide them. We pray for them. We try to make deals with God for them. If God does X, we will do Y in return.
David wanted to build God a house. But God said no. David’s son could build the house. God, on the other hand, would build David’s dynasty. We may think we dream big, but God’s reality is bigger and better than our biggest dreams. Our wish and desire is small compared to God’s desire for us. We want the nice house and Jesus himself is preparing a place for us.
We want to live in comfort and God has a place for us with streets paved in gold. Whatever our desire in this life, God has an eternity for us so much better than we can imagine. Our day may be bad, our week may be rocky, but our eternity will be a peaceful one with God. Your troubles of today are just a grain of sand in a bucket of eternity. Trust in the Lord and when you ask for his help, know that you may want a way out, but he has a way forward planned that is more awesome than you can imagine.
