At church, occasionally we have babies crying during the service. Our church has a nursery, and a “cry room” for mothers (even a nursing mom room), but sometimes a mother wants her baby in the room with her and the baby cries. Our pastor deals with that by ignoring the baby.
That’s right, he preaches right through it. One day he decided to make a comment. To paraphrase, he said “I like babies crying. It means someone is interested enough to stay in the room and listen. I just keep preaching.”
Donald Trump, on the other hand, got all passive-aggressive about a baby crying at his rally in Ashburn, Virginia.
Don’t worry about that baby. I love babies,” Trump said after hearing the baby crying during an aside about the trade imbalance. “Don’t worry about it. I love babies. I hear that baby crying, I like it. What a baby. What a beautiful baby. Don’t worry, don’t worry. The mom’s running around like—don’t worry about it, you know. It’s young and beautiful and healthy and that’s what we want.”
The baby kept crying, because infants generally don’t get sarcasm.
Actually, I was only kidding, you can get the baby out of here,” the Republican nominee said to laughter and applause. “That’s all right. Don’t worry. I, I think she really believed me that I love having a baby crying while I’m speaking. That’s OK. People don’t understand. That’s OK.”
No. It’s not OK.
Life is messy. Most people don’t have a staff, housekeepers, groundskeepers and cooks to clean things up. Most people don’t have a staff to whisk the little ones away from a business meeting if they bring their kids along. Most people have to suffer through babies crying.
If Trump can’t keep enough presence of mind to speak through a crying baby at a rally–giving a talk he’s given a thousand times (literally), then he can’t be president.
Contrast this with how another president handled a situation involving children and stress. If Trump can’t handle one crying baby when nothing is at stake, how will he ever handle this.
He won’t. Trump is incapable of self-control, or even worse, he is okay with kicking babies out of rallies. Either way, the man is beyond redemption as someone who can lead anything beyond a corrupt self-enrichment scam posing as a real estate empire.
