ABC Thinks Mark Levin Is Deep Throat

Anyone of whom (the late) Gawker wrote is “America’s wrongest reporter” doesn’t have much to lose in the way of reputation. So ABC News’ Brian Ross went for broke, claiming he found a new Deep Throat.

On Saturday’s “World News Tonight,” Ross implied that Mark Levin has better top secret sources than President Trump himself.

It is not clear tonight whether he based his allegations on a top secret White House briefing or whether it came from reading an article on the conservative Breitbart website, posted Friday, that detailed speculation from a conspiracy-loving talk show host, Mark Levin.

There are so many blatant idiocies on display here that I feel like Scott Pruitt with an EPA org chart and a red Sharpie.

First, Mark Levin is far from “conspiracy-loving.” Until September 7 of last year, Levin was a Never Trumper. All through the primaries, Levin bashed Trump with gusto. It wasn’t until he faced the imminent existential question of “how can I live with myself if Hillary wins?”–something we all wrestled with–that Levin found himself a reluctant rider on the Trump train.

Second, the article Ross cited came from Breitbart, aka Pravda on the Potomac. It was nothing more than a summary of Levin’s radio show (podcast available here) in which he simply outlined the facts of the Obama-FISA-Russia investigation. Levin’s sources were the conspiracy-loving Washington Post and New York Times.

Third, Levin is almost certainly right. Andrew C. McCarthy, the former Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman (who blessedly departed on Feb. 18 to where such people end up for eternity–draw your own conclusion), put this into Nixonian perspective in National Review.

Nevertheless, whether done inside or outside the FISA process, it would be a scandal of Watergate dimension if a presidential administration sought to conduct, or did conduct, national-security surveillance against the presidential candidate of the opposition party. Unless there was some powerful evidence that the candidate was actually acting as an agent of a foreign power, such activity would amount to a pretextual use of national-security power for political purposes. That is the kind of abuse that led to Richard Nixon’s resignation in lieu of impeachment.

Fourth, Ross has a really bad habit of jumping to conclusions faster than Bill Clinton when he butt-dials Angelina Jolie and asks “can you hear me now?” Again, Levin is correct here.

Brian Ross is a kook: A conspiracy-loving, left-swerving, Obama-worshipping, Trump-hating, fake-news-reporting kook.

And finally, getting to the heart of the matter. If the Washington Post and the New York Times received leaked top secret information from the FBI or other sources, that Roger Stone, Paul Manafort and Carter Page were under some kind of Russia-connected investigation, the information leak was illegal and improper. That makes Trump correct that the bigger problem is the leaking.

It’s like the press stumbles upon a scene of bloody carnage with multiple dead victims lying in a pool of blood and reports that the jewelry store where they were found was robbed. Their hatred for Trump is perverting their reporting to ignore the larger crimes and focus on the smaller ones.

Mark Levin isn’t Deep Throat, and he doesn’t have a mole deep in the administration reporting all these secrets to him. Obama, however, is King Mole. Ross would rather report that Trump gets his news from Levin and Breitbart. He actually believes this. No wonder the press can’t understand why nobody believes them.
