“She served her country, she is a veteran,” accused leaker Reality Davis’ stepfather Gary Davis told Anderson Cooper. “She’s a patriot, and to see her maligned and slandered in the media is very disheartening.”
Of course they think this. They’re her family.
The government begs to differ.
“A criminal complaint was filed in the Southern District of Georgia today charging Reality Leigh Winner, 25, a federal contractor from Augusta, Georgia, with removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet, in violation of 18 U.S.C. Section 793(e),” a statement from the Department of Justice read.
The government’s version is simple. Winner knew what she did was illegal. She agreed to certain rules when she signed on and received her security clearance. She broke those rules. She will go to jail (most likely).
“She was very scared,” Winner’s mother, Billie Winner-Davis, told Cooper. “They took her by surprise. She was not expecting any of this.”
After Edward Snowden barely escaped with his eyeglasses, through China, eventually ending up a “guest” of Vladimir Putin in Moscow; after Bradley (excuse me, Chelsea) Manning was caught and court-martialed for leaking thousands of pages to Wikileaks; did Winner really believe she wasn’t going to get caught for leaking highly classified material to the American press?
“My biggest fear in all of this is that she’s not going to get a fair trial,” Winner-Davis added. “She’s going to be made an example of … I’m terrified for her right now because of the news, the climate, the social media.”
Do her parents expect anyone to believe she did this out of patriotism? Do they believe she hasn’t picked a team, to be part of the so-called “deep state?”
If there is a “deep state,” it’s probably not a group of highly-trained spies conspiring to bring down Trump. It’s more likely a hive of people like Winner, most of whom have a healthy fear of jail and an understanding that FBI agents will arrest anyone regardless of their political views, if they’re charged with a federal crime.
Reality Leigh Winner’s apparent social media footprint also shows that she is a supporter of other liberal causes, including the Women’s March and the Islamic Society of North America, the Muslim civil rights group.
She also recently referred to President Trump as a “piece of s**t” because of his position on the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) protests.
Everyone, even government employees with access to highly classified information, has a right to his or her own political opinion. Those in the active duty military could receive an Article 15 for calling the president what Winner called him. But they’re still entitled to think it.
Where Winner went wrong is by doing something to try to bring about Trump’s ruin.
Two things emerge: (1) it won’t work; and (2) she’s going to jail. Let this be a lesson to any other aspiring leakers.
Winner’s parents should know better.
