FAKE NEWS: CNN Equates Christian Groups with Hate Groups

On Thursday morning CNN published an article titled: “Here are all the active hate groups where you live.” Identifying 917 “hate groups,” CNN plotted the organizations on a map and listed them by name. In the aftermath of the violent protests fueled by racist ideology in Charlottesville, compiling a list of hate groups is a laudable project, an important initiative that might educate and serve the public. However, a brief look at CNN’s list reveals a major problem: lumped together with legitimate hate groups such as the Klu Klux Klan are Christian public policy and religious liberty advocacy organizations, including one that won a 7-2 decision at the Supreme Court earlier this summer.

In fact, the “fake news” basis of the article is evident within Dakin Andone’s first two sentences. Andone writes, “917. That’s the number of hate groups operating in the US, according to data from the Southern Poverty Law Center.”

Thus, without reading further the glaring problem with CNN’s list is clear- its’ reliance on data from the widely discredited Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) which recklessly demonizes groups that disagree with their progressive and liberal policy positions. SPLC has a history of inflammatory rhetoric directed against conservative and religious organizations. In fact, even liberal commentators have noted SPLC’s longstanding bias toward conservatives. Alexander Cockburn (a liberal writer for The Nation) has described SPLC leaders as the “archsalesmen of hatemongering.”

Further, SPLC has been linked to the 2012 attempted mass murder at the Washington D.C. office of the Family Research Council (FRC). The assailant, Floyd Corkins II revealed to FBI authorities that he was motivated by the “Hate Map” prominently featured on SPLC’s website that listed Family Research Council as a “hate group.”

Despite SPLC’s association with the 2012 FRC attempted murder and their utter lack of objective criteria to evaluate “hate groups,” CNN and other media organizations continue to lend credibility to the SPLC by citing them as a credible source. This is despite admissions from SPLC leadership that the organization’s primary objective is not really identifying hate groups. Mark Potok, Senior Fellow at SPLC, who has been with the organization since 1997 admitted once in an interview, “Our criteria for a ‘hate group,’ first of all, have nothing to do with criminality or violence of any kind… It’s strictly ideological.” He added, “I want to say plainly that our aim in life is to destroy these groups, to completely destroy them.”

Following this weekend’s deadly protests where white supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and Klu Klux Klan supporters provoked clashes with counter protesters that left one woman dead and several injured, it is important to identify hateful ideologies and groups that perpetuate them. However, equating Alliance Defending Freedom, Family Research Council, Liberty Counsel, and the American Family Association with ninety-one local chapters of the Klue Klux Klan is dangerous and reckless, and invites escalating violence against conservative and religious groups whose only “crime” is dissenting from the liberal orthodoxy held by a few dozen Alabama liberals.

CNN prefaced their list of “hate groups” with this explainer about the SPLC: “The Alabama-based nonprofit activist group tracks civil rights and hate crimes and defines a hate group as an organization with ‘beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics.’”

Interpreted within the guidelines of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, SPLC’s definition of a hate group as an organization with “beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people” would be helpful, and could provide criteria for evaluating actual hate groups. However, it is clear that SPLC’s understanding of “immutable characteristics” extends to the contested categories of gender identity and sexual orientation. Because of this, conservative organizations and Christian ministries are categorized as “hate groups,” despite holding the belief about human sexuality and marriage that Christians, Catholics, Jews, and Muslims have held for millennia.

In short, CNN’s reliance on the Southern Poverty Law Center is reckless because it demonizes mainline conservative and Christian groups, rendering the designation “hate group” meaningless. There are legitimate hate groups in America, organizations that should be identified and marginalized because their ideology is hateful and has no place in civilized society. However, organizations and ministries that advocate for the sanctity of marriage, the family, and religious liberty have nothing to do with the racists who triggered this weekend’s tragic events. For CNN to imply otherwise is the epitome of “fake news.”

BREAKING: Trump Announces Ban on Transgender Military Service

On Wednesday morning, President Trump announced via Twitter that people identifying as “transgender” will no longer be allowed to serve in the United States military. The decision marks a reversal of Obama-era policy.

Announcing the policy change, President Trump said:

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow…… Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming….. victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”

The announcement represents an abrupt departure from former President Barack Obama, who last year instructed then-Secretary of Defense Ash Carter to lift the ban on transgender military service.

Two weeks ago Congress narrowly rejected a proposal that would have rejected the Obama-era practice of requiring the Pentagon to pay for gender transition surgeries. The bill was defeated 214-209 as 24 Republicans joined a unanimous Democratic caucus. Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-R) who introduced the measure, estimated that transition surgeries could cost the military 1.3 billion over the next 10 years.

Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council, praised the President’s decision: “I applaud President Trump for keeping his promise to return to military priorities – and not continue the social experimentation of the Obama era that has crippled our nation’s military.  The military can now focus its efforts on preparing to fight and win wars rather than being used to advance the Obama social agenda… The last thing we should be doing is diverting billions of dollars from mission-critical training to something as controversial as gender reassignment surgery.”

Bradley Manning, the transgender soldier convicted for violations under the Espionage Act for disclosing nearly 75,000 classified/sensitive military documents, responded to the decision on Twitter, saying: “So, biggest baddest most $$ military on earth cries about a few trans people but funds the F-35? Sounds like cowardice.” Manning was pardoned by President Obama and released earlier this year.

UN Declares Biblical Site “Palestinian World Heritage Site”

On Friday, the United Nation’s cultural agency, UNESCO, voted to designate the old city of Hebron as a “Palestinian World Heritage site”. Hebron is the location of the Cave of the Patriarchs (also known as the Cave of Machpelah), where biblical figures including Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their wives are buired. The vote took place despite vocal objections from the United States and Israel.

The Cave of Machpelah is the world’s most ancient Jewish site and the second holiest place for Jewish people (following the Temple Mount in Jerusalem). According to the Bible the cave and adjoining field were purchased by the patriarch Abraham approximately 3700 years ago. The account is detailed in Genesis 23.

The decision (conducted via secret ballot among UNESCO member states) marks the first time in history that the United Nations has recognized a significant Jewish religious site as part of the “State of Palestine.”

Following the vote, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the decision: “This is another delusional UNESCO decision. This time they decided that the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron is a Palestinian site, meaning that it is not Jewish, and that the site is in danger. Not a Jewish site?! Who is buried there? Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah – our patriarchs and matriarchs! And the site is in danger? It is only in those places where Israel is, such as Hebron, that freedom of religion for all is ensured.”

The United Nations, through the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has the authority to designate sites as “World Heritage Sites.” Criteria for selection includes the site’s cultural, historical, or scientific significance. Sites are legally protected by international treatises. Hebron now becomes the third “Palestinian World Heritage Site,” all of which have been designated as “in danger.”

The old city of Hebron and the Cave of the Patriarchs is located in Judea, commonly referred to as the West Bank. As the largest city in the West Bank, Hebron is home to approximately 200,000 Palestinians and 500-800 Jewish Israelis. Administration of the city is divided into two sectors: H1 is governed by the Palestinian Authority whereas H2 is under the auspice of Israel. The Israeli military maintains a significant military presence in H2 to protect Jewish inhabitants who represent a sizeable minority of Hebron’s population.

Hebron is one of the oldest cities in the world, dating from the Chalcolithic period (3,000 years BC). According to the Bible (2 Samuel 2:11) Hebron served as King David’s capital during the first seven years of his reign. Hebron has been conquered by the Romans, Jews, Crusaders, and Muslims throughout its’ history. As mentioned, Jewish tradition holds that the Tomb of the Patriarchs is where Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their wives are buried. Muslims also attach significance to the site. Muslim Mamelukes built the Ibrahimi mosque in the 14th century to honor Abraham, who is revered in Islam.

After constructing the mosque, Muslim Mamelukes forbade entry to the site to Jews (who were not allowed beyond the seventh step on the outside staircase). This was enforced throughout the reign of the Ottoman Empire (1517-1917) and by the British government during the British Mandate (1923-1948). Following the Israeli War of Independence (1948) and the Jordanian annexation of the Judean Mountains, it was illegal for Israeli citizens to enter Hebron. However, following the Six-Day War in 1967, Hebron became part of Israel. In 1967, Major-General Rabbi Shlomo Goren, the Chief Rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces, was the first Jew to enter the Cave of Machpelah in over 700 years.

Despite the Jewish religious and historical significance of the city, UNESCO’s declaration barely mentions any of this. Although “the tomb of Abraham and his family” is mentioned, the only other reference to Judaism occurs in the sentence: “This place became a site of pilgrimage for the three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.”

In addition to his strong denouncement of the decision, Netanyahu announced that Israel would cut one million dollars from Israel’s payments to the United Nations and that the money would be used to establish a Jewish heritage museum in Kiryat Arba, a small city bordering Hebron.

Despite the UNESCO declaration regarding Hebron, the city (and the Cave of Machpelah) remain under Israeli control.

Liberty Counsel Sues GuideStar Over SPLC “hate group” Label

On Wednesday, Liberty Counsel filed a federal lawsuit against GuideStar over the group’s decision to designate Liberty Counsel as a “hate group” on their website. The lawsuit charges that GuideStar’s actions violated the Lanham Act, a federal statute that prohibits false and misleading statements that create harm for businesses or organizations. GuideStar is also charged with state law violations of Interference with Business Expectancy and Defamation. Liberty Counsel is seeking a permanent injunction, damages, and attorney’s fees and costs.

“We want to stop the lies because this kind of reporting is defamatory, it’s reckless, and it’s dangerous,” said Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel.

Liberty Counsel is an international nonprofit, litigation, education, and policy organization whose mission is to advance pro-life, pro-marriage, and religious liberty public policy. In 2015 the organization made international news when it represented Kim Davis, a Kentucky country clerk who refused to comply with a federal court order directing her to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Wednesday’s lawsuit comes after Liberty Counsel, along with 45 other conservative organizations, was designated as a “hate group” on GuideStar’s website. Although GuideStar has since removed the moniker, they said they would continue to provide the “hate group” information upon request. GuideStar advertises itself as the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations and provides information about mission, legitimacy, reputation, finances, transparency and governance to potential big-time donors.

According to GuideStar CEO Jacob Harold, the criteria used to label conservative organizations with the undesirable designation was “the fact that they had been designated as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).” Thus, based solely on the SPLC’s recommendation, leading pro-family groups such as Liberty Counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom, the American Family Association, and the Family Research Council were labeled “hate groups.” GuideStar purports to monitor 1,684,038 nonprofit organizations, but chose to only characterize 46 (mostly Christian conservative organizations) as “hateful.”

Although GuideStar claims to be nonpartisan, relying on the SPLC betrays a liberal bias. In fact, even liberal commentators have noted the SPLC’s longstanding animus toward conservatives groups. Alexander Cockburn (a noted liberal), recently described the SPLC leaders as the “archsalesmen of hatemongering.” The Foreign Policy Magazine also concluded that the SPLC’s method for designating groups as “hate groups” is flawed because they are not objective.

Further, SPLC has been linked to the 2012 attempted murder at the Washington, D.C. office of the Family Research Council. The gunman, Floyd Corkins II admitted to the FBI that he was motivated by the “Hate Map” on the SPLC website that listed the Family Research Council as a “hate group.”

Given the SPLC’s reputation, GuideStar’s decision to partner with them raises questions. Although CEO Jacob Harold recently stated that “GuideStar does not engage in partisan politics,” the facts suggest otherwise. Putting aside Mr. Harold’s own liberal political activism (Harold served as host for a NARAL pro-abortion men’s event in 2014, donated to the Obama campaign in 2011, and has written extensively on climate change), GuideStar has admitted that there are “legitimate critiques of SPLC’s analysis” and that the SPLC has been accused of political bias. Further, SPLC leadership has been quite clear about their organization’s objective. Mark Potok, Senior Fellow at SPLC, who has been with the organization since 1997 admitted once in an interview, “Our criteria for a ‘hate group,’ first of all, have nothing to do with criminality or violence or any kind… It’s strictly ideological.” He added, “I want to say plainly that our aim in life is to destroy these groups, to completely destroy them.”

“Despite serious concerns about the false labeling by the SPLC, GuideStar has used this harmful rhetoric for the purpose of causing financial and reputational injury to Liberty Counsel and other nonprofit organizations, said Staver. “GuideStar is playing with fire. There are unhinged people who have relied upon this reckless rhetoric to threaten and even cause physical harm and death because a person or organization was falsely labeled as a ‘hater’ or ‘hate group’ This is not a game.”

In response to the lawsuit, SPLC President Richard Cohen remained defiant, saying, “We stand ready to support our designation of Liberty Counsel as a hate group. Liberty Counsel is a group that has consistently called LGBT people ‘immoral, unnatural and self-destructive.’ It has a track record of attempting to criminalize homosexual conduct and to legalize discrimination against the LGBT community.”

BREAKING: President Trump Breaks Israel Embassy Promise

President Donald Trump has signed a waiver that will delay the move of the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, the White House said Thursday. Facing a midnight deadline that would have automatically triggered the embassy move, the President decided to break his promise and maintain the status quo.

As the deadline approached yesterday, sources at the White House late Wednesday indicated that the President would likely continue his predecessors’ practice of signing six-month waivers that prevent the embassy’s relocation. This is despite promises on the campaign trail that moving the embassy would be a foreign policy priority designed to strengthen U.S.-Israel relations after eight strained years under President Obama.

When asked by reporters on Wednesday about the impending deadline, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was vague, saying, “Once we have a decision, we’ll put it out.”

Despite the decision, the White House insisted today: “While President Donald J. Trump signed the waiver under the Jerusalem Embassy Act and delayed moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, no one should consider this step to be in any way a retreat from the President’s strong support for Israel and for the United States-Israel alliance. As he has repeatedly stated his intention to move the embassy, the question is not if that move happens, but only when.”

For a President who campaigned on the promise of bold and courageous leadership, this is a cowardly, and frankly shocking failure in leadership. Reneging on this promise is a spectacular disappointment for pro-Israel supporters and voters who resonated with Trump’s strong positions on Israel. For a young administration still lacking a significant, substantive foreign policy accomplishment, moving the embassy is a pro-America, pro-Israel decision that would have set the trajectory and tone of Trump’s foreign policy, particularly in regards to the Middle East. Thus, today’s decision is not just a missed opportunity, it is a failure in leadership.

During the 2016 presidential campaign then candidate-Trump boldly promised, “We will move the American embassy to the eternal capital of the Jewish people, Jerusalem. And we will send a clear signal that there is no daylight between American and our most reliable ally, the state of Israel.”

He also promised: “When I become President the days of treating Israel like a second-class citizen will end on day one.”

Unfortunately, the days of treating Israel like a second-class citizen did not end on day one, and with today’s decision, will continue for at least another six months. Since assuming office, an obvious shift in rhetoric has occurred. When asked directly where the administration stood on moving the embassy, Trump said on February 10, “I am thinking about the embassy, I am studying the embassy [issue], and we will see what happens. The embassy is not an easy decision. It has obviously been out there for many, many years, and nobody has wanted to make that decision. I’m thinking about it very seriously, and we will see what happens.”

Today’s broken promise means that Israel remains the only sovereign nation in the world whose capital is not fully recognized by the United States. This is shameful, and is the type of decision we would have expected with President Hillary Clinton, not President Trump.

Eighteen years ago, Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 which says, “Jerusalem should remain an undivided city in which the rights of every ethnic and religious group are protected; Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel; and the United States Embassy in Israel should be established in Jerusalem no later than May 31, 1999.” Despite nearly unanimous Congressional support (the law was adopted by the Senate 93-5 and the House 374-37), Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama have signed a series of waivers delaying the move, citing security concerns.

The most recent waiver had been signed by President Obama in December 2016.

When asked last month about the President’s apparent about-face on the embassy issue, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Israel’s position is that all embassies, particularly the US embassy, should be in Israel’s capital- Jerusalem.” According to Israeli media reports, as recently as Monday of this week Prime Minister Netanyahu attempted to persuade Trump to honor his promise. Netanyahu’s contention is that by moving the embassy the President would both correct a historical anomaly whereby the United States does not recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and force the Palestinians to recognize that they cannot divorce Israel and the Jewish people from Jerusalem.

Around the United States, as conservatives and Israel supporters waited for the President’s impending decision, many voiced their hope that President Trump would honor his promise and not sign the waiver. Today they are sorely disappointed.
On Wednesday, Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel and President of Christians in Defense of Israel said,

Congress signed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1999. Eighteen years waiting is more than enough. It is beyond time for the United States to move the Embassy to Jerusalem. To not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel contradicts the Bible, history, present-day reality, and is anti-Semitic. Move the Embassy! Keeping the Embassy in Tel Aviv has not brought the Palestinian Authority to the table to talk peace. The Hamas government in Gaza has no interest in peace. This year, being the 50th anniversary of a united Jerusalem, is the perfect time to move the Embassy to the capital of Israel

BREAKING: Afghanistan Terrorist Attack Death Toll Rises to 90; 11 Americans Injured

In one of the bloodiest attacks in recent years, an explosion outside the Afghan presidential palace has killed 90 people and injured hundreds more. Although no one has claimed responsibility, authorities believe the attack was carried out by a suicide car bomber possibly affiliated with Taliban or ISIS fighters.

The explosion targeted the diplomatic area of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, where in addition to Afghan government offices, foreign embassies, consulates, and other government buildings are located. The size and location of the attack—in the vicinity of so many embassies—demonstrates sophisticated technology and the ability to avoid high level anti-terrorism security measures.

According to reports, the blast was so powerful that windows were shattered in restaurants and other buildings over a mile from the site of the bomb’s detonation. Gen. Hassan Shah Frogh, Kabal’s police chief said that the bomb was detonated on a street adjacent to the German embassy. “The Blast was so huge that it dug a big crater as deep as four meters,” Frogh said.

According to the New York Times, the German embassy was extensively damaged. Pictures reveal shattered windows and debris scattered around the building. German officials said that several of their diplomats were injured and that an Afghan security guard employed by the embassy had been killed by the blast.

Ashraf Ghani, Afghanistan’s President, said in a statement: “The terrorists, even in the holy month of Ramadan, the month of goodness, blessing and prayer, are not stopping the killing of our innocent people.”

Hugo Llorens, the current Special Charge d’ Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul (President Trump has not yet appointed an ambassador to Afghanistan) released a statement that reads in part:

“Our commitment is unwavering; we stand with the Afghan people and the Government of the National Unity as they strive to build a brighter, safe tomorrow for the people of this great nation. The struggle in Afghanistan is a fight between the overwhelming majority of Afghans who wish to build a better future for themselves, their families, and their noble land, pitted against small but despicable and barbaric cults who only know death and destruction. On behalf of the Embassy and the American people, I offer my deepest condolences to the families of all those killed and hope for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

UPDATE: According to reports, 11 U.S. citizens were among the hundreds injured in an attack in the diplomatic area in Kabul that killed at least 90 people. The Americans were contract personal who work in the area.

Horrific Undercover Planned Parenthood Video Released

The Center for Medical Progress (CMP) has released a new undercover video that features shocking remarks from Planned Parenthood, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and Stem Express LLC executives regarding abortion procedures and fetal tissue procurement. The three-minute video, filmed at the 2014 and 2015 National Abortion Federation (NAF) conventions, is a compilation of gut-wrenching comments and jokes by abortionists, including one or two by doctors who appear to admit to performing illegal partial-birth abortions.

The troubling remarks were made during presentations and panel discussions at the NAF conventions as well as to undercover CMP journalists.

The latest video comes after a California judge’s gag order had prevented the video’s release for nearly two years. The video is one of over a dozen that CMP has released since 2015 that capture video and audio evidence of Planned Parenthood engaging in the illegal sale of aborted baby parts. Today’s video compilation indicates more undercover videos are forthcoming.

In 2015, NAF and Planned Parenthood filed an injunction blocking CMP founder David Daleiden from releasing further videos. Despite the release of today’s video, Daleiden continues to face legal pressure. As recently as March 28th, 2017, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed fifteen felony charges against Daleiden and Sandra Merritt, alleging that the journalists were guilty of conspiring to pose as BioMax employees to intentionally record confidential communication between themselves and Planned Parenthood associates in California.

Some of the most shocking comments include doctors and technicians describing abortion procedures in graphic terms.

Dr. Lisa Harris, medical director of Planned Parenthood Michigan, advises the pro-choice crowd that they should admit abortion is murder:

“Given that we actually see the fetus the same way, and given that we might actually both agree that there’s violence in here… Let’s just give them all the violence, it’s a person, it’s killing, let’s just give them all that.”

In a stunning and damning admission, Dr. Stacy-De-Lin, the director of abortion services for Planned Parenthood of New York City, candidly quips: “We certainly do intact D and E’s.” Dilation and extraction, another term for partial-birth abortion, is a method that has been illegal since 2003 following the passage of the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act.

Dr. Uta Landy, the founder of the Consortium of Abortion Providers for Planned Parenthood, is heard on the video recalling a story in which a fetal eye falls into her lap. Landy jokes, “An eyeball just fell down into my lap, and that is gross!”

In perhaps the most unsettling exchange, Dr. Ann Schutt-Aine, the director of abortion services for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, explains, “If I’m doing a procedure, and I’m seeing that I’m in fear that it’s about to come the umbilicus [navel], I might ask for a second set of forceps to hold the body at the cervix and pull off a leg or two, so it’s not PBA [partial-birth abortion].”

Other comments on the video appear to provide evidence of Planned Parenthood’s involvement in the illegal practice of profiting from fetal-tissue trafficking.

Dr. Leslie Drummon, an abortion provider at Planned Parenthood says, “I get a lot of oohs and ahhs from Stem Express. You know, they’re wanting livers… last week I was in Sacramento, and she said, “I need four intact limbs.” ”

Dr. Deborah Nucatola, the senior director of medical services for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the central figure in a previous CMP video, discusses how to perform a procedure in order to keep organs intact: “You know, sometimes she’ll tell me she wants a brain, and we’ll, you know, leave the calvarium in till last, and then try to basically take it, or actually, you know, catch everything and keep it separate from the rest of the tissue so it doesn’t get lost.”

Dr. Paul Blumenthal, the former medial director for Planned Parenthood Maryland bluntly says, “I know Planned Parenthood sells a lot of stuff [fetal tissue] to people.”

Although the media has remained largely silent on the latest video, many groups have expressed outrage. Responding to the latest video, Daniel Darling, the Vice President of Communications at the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention said:

“David Daleiden’s courageous journalism is exposing, yet again, Planned Parenthood’s destructive profit-making assault on human dignity. Those who take seriously the gospel call to stand up for human dignity and for justice, must lend their voices to those whose voices have been trampled by the demonic infanticide of Planned Parenthood. And we must offer young women in crisis a more hopeful way that sees both the pregnant women and her baby as created in the image of God and worthy of respect.”

In a statement, Lila Rose, Founder and President of Live Action, noted the shocking language of those caught in the video: “A new video shows top-level Planned Parenthood executives joking about killing children through brutal abortion procedures. Abortionists and workers laugh about finding the eyeballs of preborn babies, crushing the skulls and bodies of the children they abort, and harvesting their brains to the highest bidder. Planned Parenthood’s cruelty against human life is sickening, and Congress must make sure that not one more cent goes towards the abortion profiteer.”

In response to CMP’s 2015 videos, a special committee of Congress was tasked to investigate Planned Parenthood’s unethical and potentially illegal participation in the trafficking of fetal tissue. In December 2016, the committee recommended that prosecutors investigate one Planned Parenthood affiliate and referred a few other organizations for criminal or regulatory probes. The committee was dissolved in January 2017.

The new undercover video can be seen above.

Trump Expands Pro-Life Mexico City Policy

On Monday the Trump administration announced that it will broaden the scope of the pro-life Mexico City Policy that bans U.S. aid from supporting NGO’s that perform or endorse abortion.

In a statement President Trump said, “I direct the Secretary of State, in coordination with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, to the extent allowable by law, to implement a plan to extend the requirements of the reinstated Memorandum to global health assistance furnished by all departments or agencies.”

The statement concluded, “I further direct the Secretary of State to take all necessary actions… to ensure that U.S. taxpayer dollars do not fund organizations or programs that support or participate in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization.”

Commenting on the new policy, the White House said, “The pro-life policy will apply to global health assistance funding for international health programs, such as those for HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, malaria, global health security, and family planning and reproductive health.”

Dubbed the “Protecting Life in Global Assistance Initiative,” the expanded Mexico City policy will now cover all foreign health assistance provided by government agencies including the State Department, U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Department of Defense.

Before the policy change, the Mexico City policy only applied to family planning funds distributed in overseas aid programs by the Statement and USAID, effecting $600 million in funds. Under the expanded policy around 8.8 billion in federal aid money will be covered.

In January, President Trump reinstated the Mexico City policy, an executive order first signed by President Ronald Reagan that prohibits groups that provide or promote overseas abortions from receiving American aid money. Since Reagan, every Republican president as kept what critics describe as a “gag rule” in place whereas Democratic presidents have rescinded it.

According to the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention the Mexico City policy is an effective deterrent for organizations that promote abortion:

When the policy is not in place (as under President’s Clinton and Obama), NGOs are allowed to promote abortion as a method of “family planning.” Since federal funds are “fungible,” this allows NGOS that promote and perform abortions to use taxpayer money to pay for salaries and other marketing costs to promote abortion, freeing their own funds to be used to perform abortions. As long as the abortions are not directly being paid for by federal funds, then the abortion-promoting agency is not in violation of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.

When the policy is in place, though, the abortion providers are not only hindered in their promotion efforts, they are less likely to be able to operate in foreign countries. For example, when President Reagan first implemented the policy International Planned Parenthood Federation no longer qualified and immediately lost more than 20 percent of its total funding.

Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council praised the President Trump’s decision:

“The Mexico City Policy’s implementation should reassure everyone who’s questioned the merits of the president’s recent executive order on religious liberty. If conservatives doubt this president’s sincerity on the issue, they shouldn’t. At the very least, he deserves the chance to implement the order before people judge how effective it is. All he’s done these first 120 days is prove the critics wrong. I’m confident his religious freedom protections will be no different.”
