Ben Sasse Wins the Internet Today

This morning, The Hill reported on a survey it had sent out regarding which GOP senators are and are not planning to attend the party’s national convention “alt-right” orange god-king’s would-be coronation to his tawdry gilded throne.

A survey by The Hill found that 32 Senate Republicans plan to attend the convention in Cleveland later this month, while 15 will skip it.  Five Republican senators said they had not yet decided, and two did not respond.

A number of the senators surveyed have accompanying quotations, either from themselves or from their spokesmen.  The explanations vary.  Ted Cruz, for example, has the entirely reasonable explanation of, “We’ve got nearly 600 delegates, and I want to go and say thank you for the hard work all of them put in,” whereas The Hill has reminded us of Jeff Sessions’ perfidy by simply acknowledging that he will “serve as chairman of the [very pro-Trump] Alabama delegation.”

Anyway, Ben Sasse, probably the most aggressively #NeverTrump-y of all notable #NeverTrump elected Republicans, wins the Internet today for his succinct statement.

Ben Sasse (Neb.) — Spokesman: “Sen. Sasse will not be attending the convention and will instead take his kids to watch some dumpster fires across the state, all of which enjoy more popularity than the current front-runners.”

It is worth noting that Mike Lee, a fellow deeply principled Trump skeptic/opponent who, along with Ben Sasse, is another of the GOP’s most philosophically well-grounded proponents of a true limited-government conservatism, can directly assist Sasse (and, thus, all of us) here through his coveted convention position on the GOP’s Rules Committee.  The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that the Trump campaign “fear[s]” the possibility of Senator Lee using his influential status to “urge[ ] votes in favor of unbinding delegates.”  As it should.

Let’s do this, gentlemen.  Put country ahead of party.  #FreeTheDelegates and spare us the impending ideological, moral, and political disaster that would promptly follow the orange-hued clown’s ascendance to formal GOP nominee.
