Betsy Devos is a Staggeringly Good Choice

I grew up in Dubai. When my family repatriated before the Gulf War started I moved to a private school that was thirty minutes from my home in rural Louisiana. But when the war broke out and gas prices soared to a staggering $1.25 a gallon, my parents decided it was time to put me in the local public school.

I will never forget the culture shock of going from one of the best schools in the world in Dubai to a public high school in rural Louisiana. My first week in school, in 10th grade, a student in my English class wanted to know the meaning of the word “L-I-B-E-R-T-Y”.

When I got to college, I volunteered in a local inner-city elementary school and during the summer would go home to Louisiana where I worked in my old school. The things teachers have to deal with and get blamed for is amazing and often unappreciated.

In Michigan, Betsy Devos has been a champion for education reform and school choice. Teachers unions hate her guts because she is such a strong advocate for reforms that benefit students at the expense of bureaucracy. She understands that one size fits all education is unacceptable and stridently changed her mind on common core when she saw it was becoming a tool for one size fits all corporate-government education of automatons.

The most impressive part of her pick, to be honest, is that she was a Trump critic and supported John Kasich at the Republican Convention. Donald Trump’s willingness to go with someone like Devos is a strong sign of leadership and picking Betsy Devos shows he really is committed to reforming a terrible system that is failing our children.
