There is reportedly international blowback from Donald Trump’s immigration pause. The Baghdad Investor is reporting that the nation of Iraq is retaliating by banning Americans from entering the country for 90 days.
Fortune reported earlier today Iraq had threatened to retaliate against President Trump’s immigration order.
“Iraq is on the front line of the war on terrorism,” said a statement by the Iraqi parliament’s foreign committee. “It is unfair that the Iraqis are treated in this way.”
Iraq’s action could affect US aid workers as well as soldiers and military officials who are in Iraq to fight ISIS. According to the Investor report, the ban also applies to US citizens who have already received a visa as well as new applications.
“This decision by the U.S. is arbitrary,” Intisar Al-Jabbouri, a Sunni member of parliament from the Nineveh Governorate in northern Iraq, told Fortine. “The Iraqi government has the right to reciprocate.”
According to the Baghdad Investor report, other countries affected by President Trump’s order are considering retaliatory measures as well.
