Following a minor procedure for a blood clot over his left eye, it was discovered that Sen. John McCain has a brain tumor, known as a glioblastoma. Tissue pathology revealed the diagnosis after the surgery. It is a very serious diagnosis, as this type of cancer only has a median survival of 14.6 months and a 10% survival rate at 5 years.
McCain is being treated at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. According to the hospital statement,
“The Senator and his family are reviewing further treatment options with his Mayo Clinic care team. Treatment options may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.”
This is the same type of tumor that killed Ted Kennedy.
