Reuters is reporting that President Trump is considering four FBI officials to serve as interim FBI director while the White House searches for a permanent replacement.
Apparently this came up during the daily briefing, with Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
That would imply that Trump isn’t 100 percent pleased with having Andrew McCabe, who has been acting director of the FBI for less than 24 hours, at the helm.
McCabe’s wife, Dr. Jill McCabe, ran as a Democrat last year for the Virginia State Senate. She lost 52 to 47 percent. Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s PAC threw in $500 grand to McCabe’s campaign. McAuliffe is a close friend of Hillary Clinton. Not that there’s any conflict there–it just looks bad.
So Trump is caught between the rocks of Scylla and the whirlpool of Charybdis with Russia on one side and Clinton emails on the other. Since firing Comey got Democrats to howl, getting rid of McCabe will positively send them into apoplexy. NBC News is already running hagiographies of him.
McCabe, who is considered to be well-respected inside the FBI, recently surfaced in reports that Trump’s chief of staff sought agency help to knock down stories about Russia and the campaign late last year. In the end, the FBI did not get involved, and the White House said there was nothing improper. A law enforcement source said FBI officials also did not consider any lines to have been crossed.
The Wall Street Journal was a bit more balanced in its report. McCabe is certainly a qualified and dedicated career bureau man. Trump should think twice before pushing him aside.
