The Democratic National Committee’s help wanted ad for party chairman has attracted a fine pool of applicants. Leading the pack is Keith Ellison, who has the kind of impeccable anti-Israel credentials and anti-Semitic past that more and more Democrats are demanding.
But wait – a formidable dark-horse has emerged. She might be white and (by her own admission) hopelessly out of touch, but Idaho Democratic Party Executive Director Sally Boynton Brown is giving Ellison a run for his money. During a debate yesterday amongst the job applicants, Brown started her pitch by declaring that “We have to accept that there is prejudice in our own party.”
Like a fool, I was expecting her to then take a shot at Ellison. Wrong:
I’m a white woman. I don’t get it. . . . .My job is to shut other white people down when they want to interrupt. My job is to shut other white people down when they want to say, “oh no, I’m not prejudiced, I’m a Democrat, I’m accepting.” My job is to make sure that they get that they have privilege….
Around the issue of race, we are so far out of alignment, I don’t even know the way back. . . .I’m from Idaho. We are soooo white! I have been reaching out and trying to connect to anybody of color that I can find to be honest with me.
At the risk of pouring cold water on the DNC’s electrifying new voice, allow me to offer a few thoughts:
- First, why would a party so obsessed with identity politics install as its chair a white Idahoan who, by her own admission “doesn’t get it,” and “doesn’t know the way back”?
- Second, the “shut white people down” theme obviously resonates in today’s Democratic Party, though I’m puzzled as to how that wins back the low income and blue collar whites who gave Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin to Trump and are apparently liking what they see from the new administration. They’re the types who might not “get that they have privilege.”
- Third, imagine what politically ambitious young whites who are moderate or even center-left and who harbor any political ambition must think about the future they’d have by jumping into the racialist cauldron that is the modern Democratic Party.
While demographers predict that America will become less white in the next few decades, that might be of little help to a Democratic Party that drives away more and more white voters with clown shows like yesterday’s DNC debate.
