Not a long time ago, Evan Bayh was ready to get out of the Senate. With the rise of the tea party and the Senate looking to switch hands to the GOP, Bayh jumped ship. But now, just before qualifying ends in Indiana, Evan Bayh wants back in the Senate. He is going to challenge Todd Young because Dan Coats, the man who replaced Bayh six years ago, is retiring.
It is important to note that one of the major reasons Bayh left was, despite his public statements, he saw the writing on the wall and did not want to work in the minority in the Senate. He senses what so many others are sensing. The GOP is headed for electoral disaster in November.
This is another data point that will be ignored by the Branch Trumpidians, but Republicans at large should take notice. The sharks are beginning to circle.
Evan Bayh, it should be noted, also left politics still quite popular. Mike Pence is struggling in Indiana in his gubernatorial re-election. There are strong rumors that Pence might be Trump’s vice presidential pick. And Bayh is doing this.
There are warning signs for the GOP everywhere you look.
