I could not go to the meeting with Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year due to the pulmonary embolism issue, but I wrote at the time that I thought conservatives were being overly sensitive. It seemed some of them went for a shakedown approach to Facebook.
I didn’t have a concern about Facebook at the time, but I do now. Facebook has decided it will rely on all liberal news outlets to decide what is and is not fake news.
Most egregious is Facebook’s reliance on Politifact, which has a well documented bias against conservatives. Remember, Politifact designated as “the lie of the year” the conservative claim that you would not be able to keep your doctor under Obamacare. Politifact relied on Barack Obama’s statement denying it. Of course we know it turned out to be true.
Likewise, Politifact labeled “half-true” the Alliance Defending Freedom claim that Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms in house. The crazy thing about this is that the very article labling it “half true” confirmed that Planned Parenthood does not perform in house mammograms.
Politifact also had a “fact checking” writer who used his personal twitter account to attack Republicans.
Hat tip, by the way, to Mark Hemingway for all of these.
Just because Politifact claims to be an honest broker does not make it so. And Facebook is not just using Politifact, but also using Snopes, which has an egregious liberal bias when it comes to political news, Climate Feedback, which considers anything questioning the global warming consensus to be heresy, and other liberal outlets.
Fake news is a huge problem. But the reason we have so much fake news is because the mainstream media blew their credibility by being openly partisan and biased. Now Facebook intends to rely on those biased partisans to shape what is true and not.
This will put conservatives at a disadvantage not because they spread fake news, but because so much of the left treats claims by the right as fake even when they are true. Leftwing presuppositions shade the left’s view of truth.
Facebook doing this is a real problem. The easier solution would be to hire a mix of conservatives and liberals in house.
