Wednesday morning, on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, host Mika Brzezinski stepped in it when speaking of the dangers of a president pushing alternative facts, saying what came out sounding like “it’s the media’s job is to control what people think.”
Joe Scarborough was defending the media’s performance since Donald Trump took office and challenged his supporters, arguing that Trump was simply doing exactly what he said he was going to do on the campaign trail and the media was simply reporting it.
Brzezinski followed up with her worries if the media were to be considered illegitimate.
“He is trying to undermine the media and trying to make up his own facts,” she stated, noting that if the economic news, for example, is bad, the media will be unable to cut through Trump’s narrative, since people will believe his statements as facts, rather than the media.
Then came what some are calling a Freudian slip.
She continued, “He could have undermined the messaging so much that he can actually control exactly what people think — and that is the…that is our job.”
If you’re skeptical, here is the clip in full:
Brzezinski attempted to clarify in a tweet later, but whatever she meant, what she claims she said is not what she said.
Today I said it's the media's job to keep President Trump from making up his own facts, NOT that it's our job to control what people think.

No one can know for certain if Brzezinski was revealing her true philosophy for the media inadvertently or simply chose her wording poorly. In context, it could very well have been the latter. Regardless, it won’t inspire any confidence in Trump supporters or others who are skeptical of the media.
