Having deployed Bill only to have him sacked (using various meanings of the word) on the first play, Hillary Clinton has turned to her third string, daughter Chelsea, to stop ‘the Bern’ from his sudden rise in the polls.
It’s not so much a gain for Sanders, as it is an indictment (using the meaning of public displeasure, the other definition remaining a constant threat) of Hillary. With Sanders essentially even in Iowa and crushing her in New Hampshire, Clinton has to be feeling deja vu from her God-given right to be president that went so wrong in 2008.
Chelsea attacked Sanders on, of all things, healthcare.
Proving that there is nothing and no one she won’t sacrifice on the altar of her political ambition, Hillary Clinton today sent her daughter Chelsea out to smear Bernie Sanders by claiming his health care plan would “strip millions and millions and millions of people of their health insurance.” On today’s With All Due Respect, Mark Halperin repeatedly said he was “stunned” by the attack. John Heilemann put in blunter terms, flatly calling the attack a “lie.”
Sanders, a full-throated socialist, wants single-payer national healthcare. Clinton, who would in reality be fine with that solution (Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber said Hillarycare was to the left of Obama), actually moved to the right to differentiate herself from her rival.
The Sanders campaign — as well as some progressive allies — has fought back with full force, accusing Clinton of using “Karl Rove tactics” that she once condemned as a presidential candidate in 2008. In that race, she said Democratic attacks on universal healthcare help Republicans while undermining “core Democratic values.”
Ah, sweet Schadenfreude. Watching Sanders accuse Hillary of being like Karl Rove while she tries to pretzel her way out of hypocrisy is richer than creme brûlée.
It’s also telling that Hillary is running out of Terminators to send back in time to kill Sarah Connor, so she’s now deploying the shape-shifting T-1000 in the form of Chelsea. Smells like desperation in the Clinton camp.
