If you want to know why Donald Trump – the guy who has spent more time in his life litigating whether Lil’ Jon or Meat Loaf ran a pizza shop better than thinking about political policy – may actually become President of the United States, watch this 20 second clip from Charlie Rose this week. In it you’ll see two former Obama administration staffers, Jon Lovett and Jon Favreau, laughing hysterically about the “if you like your insurance you can keep it” Obamacare lie they helped perpetrate. This comes on the heels of last week’s New York Times Magazine brutal profile of ‘Obama’s brain’ Ben Rhodes, who masterminded the journalist-spinning tactics that sold the Iran deal, among others. While that mainly focused on the low opinion he and others in the administration had for the press, it doubles as a look at how they view the public as well: arrogant disdain.
And it is this bulletin board material for the disaffected electorate that may end up giving Trump the White House.
On last week’s Real Time with Bill Maher, liberal rabble-rouser Dan Savage voiced his arrogant dismissiveness. “The GOP base, which is overwhelmingly rubes, idiots, sexist, racist, are overwhelmingly voting for Trump,” he said, as Ann Coulter prepared her equally eyebrow-raising Trump defense.
The problem with this line of thinking is how out-of-touch it is, and how it misconstrues the mood of the country, even on the left.
Let’s take the temporary travel ban on Muslims, the on-again-off-again position of Donald Trump that got a ton of bad press. The left likes to point to the “racist” Donald Trump supporters who like the policy. But that’s not reality. Instead, 50% of ALL voters support this policy – including 34% of Democrats.
Key stat here: 34% of Democrats support a temporary ban on all Muslim travel to the U.S.! https://t.co/ZBkXzDWE9E

I personally think it’s a terrible and impossible idea, but it takes ignoring this reality about the Democratic party to try to paint Trump supporters as far outside the mainstream.
While I don’t think giving wall-to-wall Trump coverage has much to do with Trump’s success (since his supporters don’t really care about the media), the arrogant dismissiveness in much of the media does. Like The Huffington Post, which writes opinionated stories like this from the supposed “news” department and attaches this “editor’s note” to every single article about Trump:
Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
Facebook suppressing conservative news? Check. White House knowingly spinning propaganda that the media buys? Check. A bunch of former Obama administration officials laughing about the lie that helped bring about Obamacare? Check.
Want to stop Donald Trump? The Democrats and the anti-Trump media would benefit from keeping the arrogance in check – something the Hillary Clinton campaign would be wise to start learning now, before she loses the most un-lose-able general election in history.
