Liberal Educators: Math is Biased, Needs Social Justice

“Do you ask students to think deeply about global and local social justice issues within your mathematics classroom?”

That was the actual opening line of a pitch to middle school teachers across the country from the organization Teach for America. That group and another outfit called edX are working to promote an online academic course called “Teaching Social Justice Through Mathematics” for junior high teachers.

Because if there is one thing that American education needs, it’s less emphasis on learning, and more focus on social justice advocacy. In math, no less.

At this point, history and government teachers like myself are accustomed to the religious agenda of the left being woven into our textbooks and curriculum. Whether it is Howard Zinn-inspired activism through the rewriting of American history, or the manipulation of the Constitutional underpinnings of our Founding Fathers to skew the point and purpose of our government, the social sciences are prime targets for Social Justice Warriors to conduct their generational revolution.

But math? Just to see his reaction, I asked one of my colleagues who teaches some advanced math classes at my school that very question Teach for America ponders. Here’s how our conversation went:

Me: Do you ask students to think deeply about global and local social justice issues in your classes?

Him: Do I what?

Me: Do you ask students to think deeply about global and local social justice issues in your classes?

Him: Umm, no. What does that even mean?

Me: I don’t know.

Him: I ask them to think deeply about numbers and formulas, does that count?

Me: Makes sense to me.

Him: Good talk as always.

I suspect this is how most math teachers around the country will respond to this. And if you’ve ever stepped one foot into a junior high school, you would know that the idea of getting those squirrely characters to think deeply about anything would be a feat of epic proportions.

So why are these organizations pushing for this? Reason magazine gives their answer:

In western mathematics, our ways of knowing include formalized reasoning or proof, decontextualization, and algorithmic thinking, leaving little room for those having non-western mathematical skills and thinking processes… Mathematical ethics recognizes that, for centuries, mathematics has been used as a dehumanizing tool… mathematics formulae also differentiate between the classifications of a war or a genocide and have been used to trick indigenous peoples out of land and property.

If you thought that there would ever be an end to the mindless outpouring of slights and injustices contrived by the left to advance their social justice religious agenda, let this disavow you of that silly notion right now.

Math is now biased and must be combatted. Math. As in numbers. Numbers are “dehumanizing.” Heaven help us.
