Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has decided to throw his lot in with Congressman Todd Young in the Indiana Senate primary. Young, you might recall, failed to do what he needed to get on the ballot and the National Republican Senatorial Committee went to bat for him to get him on the ballot.
Now they and all the Washington lobbyists are lining up behind Young.
But there is a better alternative in the form of Marlin Stutzman. Marlin is an Indiana farmer. He serves Indiana in the House of Representatives, with Todd Young, and his family tends the family farm.
Marlin Stutzman is also a much better conservative than Young, which is one reason McConnell is opposing Marlin Stutzman. Marlin, for example, stood up to his own Republican leadership in the House. His defiance helped bring down John Boehner. Clearly, McConnell has a reason to be nervous.
I have known Marlin for some time. I encouraged him to run for the Senate in 2010, but he wound up running for the House and won.
He is a genuinely conservative guy. He has a great family. He cares deeply for the people of Indiana. He is not afraid to defy his own leadership to do what is right. That has made him enemies, but affirmed he puts principle over partisanship.
