Mr. President, We Need More Licensed African American Gun Owners

This is a local piece, but it’s gets to the core of the issue of President Obama’s “empty chair” of gun violence.

Deputies in Bibb County have been unable to protect our young black men from gun homicides, with 28 Bibb homicides occurring in 2015, the vast majority of them the result of black-on-black gun crimes targeting young black men, all apparently committed by shooters without licenses to carry. President Obama’s proposed improvements to background checks would have had little effect on the murder rate in Macon in 2015 because the murderers here are typically packing unlawfully, and using guns obtained off the radar.

As many of you know, Erick lives in Macon, Georgia. You may also know that before he was a radio personality and blogger, he was a lawyer, and he also served on the Macon City Council before it was consolidated into Bibb County.

What you may not know is that Erick went to the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University, where one of the esteemed faculty is Dave Oedel, who teaches constitutional law among a few other specialties.

Oedel has penned an insightful article that deserves to be read and shared.

Steve Berman

The old Steve cared about money, prestige, and power. Then Christ found me. All at once things changed. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

I spent 30 years in business. Now I write and edit. But mostly I love. I have a wife and 2 kids and a dog and we live in a little house in central Georgia.
