Leftist protest culture continues to run amok. Today, newly confirmed Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos visited a local, Washington, DC public school, and was greeted by a Washington Teacher’s Union protest. Angry union members blocked her entrance into the school, shouting “Shame!” and forced her back into her SUV.
It put DeVos in a terrible situation. As a cabinet official, she has armed security. The situation could have been very ugly and dangerous if she insisted on pushing through the mob. DeVos instead walked back to her SUV, and entered the school by another entrance to complete her visit, but was mocked for not forcing her way through the blockade.
To her credit, American Federation of Teacher’s president Randi Weingarten tweeted her disapproval of the blockade, which shows how far off the rails this is. When Randi Weingarten says your union thuggery has gone too far, its time to reassess your life choices. It’s like Alex Jones saying your conspiracy theory is “a little far fetched.”
The optics for Democrats and teacher’s unions are terrible. Blockading a school is ugly, and evokes the images of George Wallace. The educators involved are setting an uncivil, angry example for their students while parents are watching on national TV. This isn’t how most parents want their kids taught to handle conflict.
The messaging is bad. On a week when the left was making Elizabeth Warren a martyr for being forced to be civil to a colleague, the protesters stomped all over their own party’s #ShePersisted messaging by blockading DeVos. Last week, they complained DeVos hadn’t spent enough time in public schools. She’s goes to visit, and is greeted by a mob blockading her entrance.
It’s Jurassic Park. Democrats and unions have created a weaponized mob, thinking they could control it for their own profit, but now the mob is self-aware, and undermining the Democrats who created it.
