Nope, not clickbait. The fat, stubby-fingered dictator in Pyongyang actually tested the waters by running an article in state-run communist media that praises the stubby-fingered, Putin-praising, Mussolini-retweeting authoritarian that the Party of Lincoln is set to nominate.
Cue The Guardian, which quotes extensively the state-run North Korean News outlet:
North Korean state media has praised U.S. presidential hopeful Donald Trump, describing him as a ‘wise politician’ and ‘far-sighted candidate’ who could help unify the Korean peninsula…
‘Trump said he will not get involved in the war between the South and the North, isn’t this fortunate from North Korea’s perspective?’…
‘Yes do it, now…Who knew that the slogan ‘Yankee Go Home’ would come true like this? The day when the ‘Yankee Go Home’ slogan becomes real would be the day of Korean Unification’…
The North Koreans even go out of their way to take a jab at “dull Hillary”:
‘The president that U.S. citizens must vote for is not that dull Hillary—who claimed to adapt the Iranian model to resolve nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula—but Trump, who spoke of holding direct conversation with North Korea.’
Where to even begin? North Korea is one of the world’s most brutal, rogue, terror-supporting states. Their Soviet-style gulags, as of 2014, “operate[d] a growing network of prison camps containing up to 200,000 prisoners living in unfathomable conditions.” They routinely violate international law with militant missile tests, routinely existentially threaten our ally South Korea, and even start cyberwars as a means of blackmailing private U.S. companies. They are, quite simply, in a league with Iran (and perhaps a few others) as amongst the most notoriously wretched actors on the entire world stage.
And now, they love them some Donald J. Trump.
One of my three main reasons for being #NeverTrump is that I think the orange-hued overlord—who coddles the Kremlin, speaks highly of Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, wants to withdraw from NATO, and according to one ex-wife, actually kept Hitler speeches by his bed—is a massive threat to sufficiently retrench from the world stage so as to effectively give up on the post-World War II U.S.-led global order. Yes, he is much more likely to do that than is Hillary Clinton, who while so horribly misguided in so many geopolitical respects is at least still a “globalist” at heart.
For what it’s worth, my other two main #NeverTrump reasons are (1) Trump losing is actually certainly better for conservatism, long-term, and (2) there is a non-negligible chance that Trump is a true would-be fascist. Securing the coveted endorsement of the North Korea politburo does not exactly help assuage us with the latter concern, either.
It should be noted that The Guardian is quick to quote a British academic for the notion that this “is not exactly Pyongyang speaking, or at least not the [North Korean] government in an official capacity.” But so what? North Korean News is a state-run news outlet in a communist country. It defies reality to suggest that such a provocative statement as this was not condoned—implicitly, but also likely explicitly—by Kim Jong-un himself, or at least by some of his closest minions.
It is also worth recalling here that Trump, who demagogues on China more than he does on any country not named Mexico, has also floated the idea of using China as leverage with respect to reining in North Korea. So the plan here seems to amount to using a nation that he has repeatedly brutalized as stealing our jobs as leverage with respect to reining in a rogue third-party that nonetheless just endorsed him. Truly, a plan that only Paul Manafort could love.
What an embarrassment for the “peace through strength” Republican Party. Ronald Reagan is surely turning in his grave.
