I’m sure Kathy Miller is a nice woman who is now being lit up by the international media for claiming there was no racism before Barack Obama. The comment was reckless and does her cause more harm than good. She is a Trump campaign chair.
Donald Trump’s campaign chair in a prominent Ohio county has claimed there was “no racism” during the 1960s and said black people who have not succeeded over the past half-century only have themselves to blame.
Kathy Miller, who is white and chair of the Republican nominee’s campaign in Mahoning County, made the remarks during a taped interview with the Guardian’s Anywhere but Washington series of election videos.
“If you’re black and you haven’t been successful in the last 50 years, it’s your own fault. You’ve had every opportunity, it was given to you,” she said.
“You’ve had the same schools everybody else went to. You had benefits to go to college that white kids didn’t have. You had all the advantages and didn’t take advantage of it. It’s not our fault, certainly.”
There absolutely has been racism in the past fifty years. I understand what Ms. Miller means by wanting people to own their own lack of success. It is a common sentiment in the south. But it also does ignore that in some cases there is racism and in many cases the wealthy can extricate themselves from public schools while poor citizens, mostly black, cannot.
Regardless, the left is doing everything it can to get Trump voters on camera saying stupid stuff. David Duke has become a useful tool of the left against Trump. Duke sees nothing wrong with what he is saying and is oblivious to the fact that his statements sabotage the Trump campaign.
Kathy Miller is no David Duke. She is not a racist and is being unfairly painted that way. But she is an idiot for engaging in this sort of conversation with anyone in the media. The media has a stereotype now of Trump and his voters and too many of them are willfully playing to that stereotype. They’d all be wise to avoid the press.
