President Trump Exposes Planned Parenthood

Earlier this week Planned Parenthood reportedly rejected an offer from President Donald Trump that would have allowed the “health care provider” to continue receiving $500 million dollars in annual federal funding on the one condition that the organization discontinue providing abortion services. Not surprisingly, the proposal was rejected immediately.

In a statement to the New York Times, President Trump said:

“As I said throughout the campaign, I am pro-life and I am deeply committed to investing in women’s health and plan to significantly increase federal funding in support of non-abortion services such as cancer screenings,” he said. “Polling shows the majority of Americans oppose public funding for abortion, even those who identify as pro-choice. There is an opportunity for organizations to continue the important work they do in support of women’s health, while not providing abortion services.”

President Trump’s offer to Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortions in the United States, is significant on several fronts.

First, the President exposed Planned Parenthood’s fallacious “3% claim.”

Planned Parenthood has alleged for years that abortion services comprise only 3% of their business. Although this claim has been repeatedly debunked, Planned Parenthood has publicly argued that they are a holistic women’s health organization and that abortion is only one service among many that they offer.

However, statistics reveal an entirely different reality. Despite the existence of 650 clinics supposedly dedicated to women’s health, consider these startling figures:

Planned Parenthood’s U.S. market share for women’s Pap tests is 0.97%.
Planned Parenthood’s U.S. market share for clinical breast exams is 1.8%.
Planned Parenthood’s U.S. market share for mammograms is 0.0%.
Planned Parenthood’s U.S. market share for abortion is 34.9%.

Second, the President exposed Planned Parenthood’s commitments.

The statistics show that Planned Parenthood performs an almost imperceptible fraction of the health care services that women actually need—clinical breast exams, cancer screenings, Pap tests, etc. Conversely, Planned Parenthood is the single largest abortion chain in the country, performing 35% of the nation’s abortions! In 2015 alone, the abortion machine exterminated 320,000 unborn children (887 abortions every day). In regards to adoption referrals, Planned Parenthood refers one child for adoption for every 160 that it aborts.

In light of this, it is easy to see why Planned Parenthood refused the President’s offer— abortion is NOT just one service offered among many; it is the distinguishing feature of the organization’s identity. Abortion marks Planned Parenthood; it is at the very core of who they are and what they do. It is their guiding principle and conviction. Providing abortion is central to the very mission and existence of Planned Parenthood.

Commenting on this story, Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary helpfully noted:

“The important thing to recognize here, the central issue, is that President Trump was willing to put the issue directly to Planned Parenthood in a way that no President of the United States had been willing to do. Now, of course, he was not naïve, he didn’t expect Planned Parenthood to take up his offer, and it was a massive offer. For instance, Planned Parenthood tells us, they repeat this all the time, that only 3% of their business is actually abortions. But what that fails to recognize is that they count every single conversation with a woman as a medical consultation, thus that’s a medical service, and yet an abortion is counted only once. But more important than the math here is the morality. Planned Parenthood is monomaniacally committed to abortion. They are the central agency of the culture of death in this society.”

Third, the President exposed Planned Parenthood’s hypocrisy.

For years, Planned Parenthood has responded to their critics by arguing that federal funding (to the tune of half a billion dollars) is necessary because of the essential services they provide for women. In their lobbying and public posturing, Planned Parenthood has consistently sought to claim the moral high ground by claiming the mantle of “women’s rights” while simultaneously framing their opponents as misogynists insensitive toward women’s health care needs.

However, if they were remotely authentic— if Planned Parenthood really did care about women and their health care—would it be admirable to willingly jeopardize hundreds of millions of dollars for only 3% of services? Hardly. Rather, it would be downright foolish and insensitive to their clientele to risk losing federal funding on a peripheral issue. But, as we’ve already seen, abortion is not a peripheral issue for Planned Parenthood.

In her response to the President Trump, Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood, said, “Planned Parenthood is proud to provide abortion—a necessary service that’s as vital to our mission as birth control or cancer screenings.”

Richard’s candid comment is insightful. Abortion, the intentional taking of unborn human life, is “vital” to the organization’s mission. So vital, that they are willing to risk losing federal funding. Well, in that case, it’s time to pull the funding.

President Trump should be commended—he challenged Planned Parenthood’s commitment to women’s health care and dared them to publicly pledge their allegiance to the radical culture of death. In their refusal to compromise, Planned Parenthood signaled that protecting the sacred cow of abortion is actually far more important than providing health services for women.

President Trump has done his part; he provided an undeserved opportunity for Planned Parenthood—an organization that spent millions campaigning against him— to continue to receive funding. They rejected his gracious offer. Thus, it is now high-time for the President and lawmakers in the House and Senate to fulfill their campaign promises and defund Planned Parenthood. Not another red cent of fungible tax-payer money should be given to them or any other organization hell-bent on destroying innocent human life.
