Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wants Trump’s cabinet picks to turn over their taxes. A couple already have, including Treasury nominee Steve Mnuchin and and HHS nominee Tom Price.
Others have not yet done so and Schumer is already singling out Rex Tillerson, the State nominee. When Schumer starts making a big deal about tax returns and tax avoidance strategies, which he will no doubt do, remember Penny Pritzker, the current Secretary of Commerce.
Pritzker is a billionaire whose family excels at using offshore trusts to avoid taxes. Pritzker claims the trusts were set up when she was a child, but Pritzker herself has used tax avoidance schemes. She’s also hired lawyers to repeatedly appeal property tax assessments on her mansion, which the little people rarely get to do.
To be clear, there is nothing illegal about what Pritzker did or really anything wrong with it. If I was in her position, I’d do it too. But Schumer was not concerned about Pritzker’s offshore trusts or tax avoidance schemes. Neither were major press outlets. When they begin their assault on Tillerson and others over taxes, remember that they were fine with Pritzker doing the same thing.
