Robert and Rebekah Mercer, Having Fueled Trump’s Rise, Abandon Him With $25.00

Robert and Rebekah Mercer tried to play it cleverly, but they seem to have been too clever by half. The father and daughter team publicly aligned with Ted Cruz, but Rebekah Mercer poured money into Breitbart News as it turned on Cruz and began building up Donald Trump. The harder Breitbart went after Cruz and Rubio, the more shared friends of ours questioned what Rebekah Mercer was doing.

It seems pretty clear now that she wanted Trump. On top of that, we also now know that Breitbart, while it was taking Rebekah Mercer’s money, was collaborating with a left-wing activist who supports Hillary Clinton to make sure the one candidate Clinton feared, Marco Rubio, never got close to the Republican nomination.

Even a few weeks ago, after video came out of Trump talking about how fame allowed him to grab women by their genitals without consequence, the Mercers stood by Trump.

But not any more.

Robert Mercer is a billionaire because he knows when to cut his losses. Today, the New York Times reports this:

The few conservative billionaires who rallied around Mr. Trump appear to have closed the spigot. Rebuilding America Now, which took in $4.4 million from a few wealthy Republicans in September, raised $214,000 in the first weeks of October. Make America Number 1, a super PAC controlled by the family of the New York investor and multimillionaire Robert Mercer, raised just $25 — which seems, at first glance, like a typo by Mr. Mercer’s standards.

You read that right. The billionaire gave Trump just $25.00.

But hey, they’ll always have Breitbart.
