States United to Prevent Gun Violence Shows Us Accidental Shootings by Toddlers is Not an Epidemic

States United to Prevent Gun Violence is an anti-gun group that really wants more restrictions, if not an outright ban, on the right to keep and bear arms. One of the data points they are using to show why new laws and regulations are needed is this one.

Notice they have to use “every week for two straight years.” It sounds like an epidemic till you think about it. There are 52 weeks in year. So there’ve only been 52 accidental shootings by toddlers who’ve gotten their hands on loaded guns?

I actually thought it was more than that. This isn’t really a high number and certainly not a number that justifies new gun control measures.

It is also worth pointing out that the toddlers who got access to firearms had irresponsible parents or were around other irresponsible people. You can’t legislate away stupidity. By the way, for perspective, there were 43 shooting victims in Chicago between midnight on January 1, 2017, and right now. There’s your epidemic, but nobody is really addressing that one because it’d inconveniently rub against how stringent gun laws are in Chicago already and yet this happens.
