I have to hand it to Donald Trump. The man is such a wrecking ball that he has almost single-handedly destroyed both major political parties. The GOP formally surrendered its principles and its family jewels (with the exception of Ted Cruz) to Trump last week, and this week the Democrats are self-destructing before our eyes.
Every American teenager has at least once stopped the car at a red light, opened every door and ran screaming around the vehicle until the light turned green, and whoever ended up driving, drove. It’s not politically correct to call it a “Chinese fire drill” but Democrats have finally let the Chinese off the hook.
The Russian hackers (read more about their connection to Trump) really did a number on the DNC. In fact, the #NeverHillary crowd inside the Democratic Party has more teeth than the #NeverTrump efforts in the GOP ever had. From The New York Times Sunday:
A large, impassioned crowd of Bernie Sanders supporters — chanting “Hell, no, D.N.C., we won’t vote for Hillary” — marched on Sunday afternoon to the site of the Democratic National Convention, promising a week in which the party’s divisions will be on vivid display in the streets.
More than 1,000 people from as far as Seattle and Florida participated in the first of what are expected to be many Sanders rallies during the convention, which formally begins Monday. The march, led by a banner proclaiming “Help End Establishment Politics, Vote No on Hillary,” was far larger than any of the protest marches last week in Cleveland at the Republican National Convention.
To avoid any further drama in Philly, the DNC created a “unity reform commission” to bind more super delegates to the primary results. But it’s too little, too late. Hillary and Bernie have supposedly already made their peace, but Democrat voters are incensed.
It seems that everything happening to the Democrats and Clinton just plays right into Trump’s “Crooked Hillary” storyline. And now some of the talk around is trending toward Trump’s strengths, and that he just could pull off a victory, despite having no cash, no formal organization, and no filter between his sewer-drenched mind and his pursed lips.
From the very beginning, I cautioned against taking Trump too lightly. With 28 declared GOP candidates last July, Trump brought more firepower that any of them. They just didn’t know it at the time. I cited four points for Trump:
- Incredible name recognition
- Money (or at least the perception of money)
- A hatred of the government
These assets worked powerfully together, and will continue to do so. The Democrats are completely at a loss of how to frame Trump to their liking, since everything about him is more or less already known. All they can do is pull out their opposition file and amplify it, hoping that someone hasn’t heard these stories. That’s the power of near-universal name recognition.
But now the Democrats have lost their voice. They’re in the middle of a giant Democrat fire drill. They don’t have likability on their side. One person I know who met Hillary back in the 1990’s (he worked for the government, close to the White House and the Clintons) told me that her entrance into a room lowered the temperature 5 degrees. The ice queen has her own personal flurry.
Hillary and the social justice (and media) machine have now raised the stakes, calling Trump’s speech “dark” and ominous. They’ve accused Trump of using “coded race language.” The Washington Post has called Trump a “unique threat to American Democracy.” But the Democrats are provably corrupt and have lost the initiative to call Trump anything until they put their own house in order.
The danger here is that the message required to combat Trump’s law and order, America first, I’m your voice rhetoric is that Trump is the devil incarnate and has to be stopped at all costs. When the rhetoric is ratcheted up to that level, what do they expect to happen? Violence is imminent.
(Ask someone what they’d do if they could go back to 1889 and kill the infant Hitler, knowing what he would grow up to be, and you’d likely get 99 out of 100 to tell you they’d kill him. If you keep comparing Trump to Hitler, how will people who believe it react if he starts leading the polls?)
This plays directly into Trump’s hand because it foments actual violence. Actual violence sets up the confirmation bias that the Democrats want chaos and Trump wants law and order.
The Democrats are finally exposed as the corrupt, race and religion-baiting, self-interested moral midgets we always knew they were. And we can thank a corrupt, race and religion-baiting, self-interested moral midget, with ties to Vladimir Putin, for doing it.
