The campaign just walked right into this one. Normally the guest lists are vetted at these events. Whether it was or not, Seddique Mateen, Omar Mateen’s father, showed up at a Hillary Clinton event.
On Tuesday morning, as news of his attendance set off an uproar on social media, Clinton aides moved to play down Mr. Mateen’s presence.
“The rally was a 3,000-person, open-door event for the public,” the campaign said in an emailed statement. “This individual wasn’t invited as a guest and the campaign was unaware of his attendance until after the event.”
Honestly, the more interesting aspect of this story is not that Mr. Mateen was at the rally. It was previously reported that the family were Democrats. What is fascinating is how quickly the American press corps itself has moved to contain the story and protect Clinton from it.
This should not have happened. He sat behind Mrs. Clinton at the event so the media could see him. There are lists of people coming to these rallies typically. Someone should have known. That it happened suggests a level of organizational incompetence and that the press is circling the wagons around the Clinton campaign over this story just buttresses the Wikileaks story showing close relationships between the press and the Clinton camp.
Oh, by the way, Mr. Mateen does not like Donald Trump.
Points to Trump on this one.
