John Kerry battled hard-charging rival John Edwards on Tuesday in the Wisconsin primary, a surprisingly close contest that breathed life into Edwards’ campaign and transformed the Democratic presidential race into a two-man matchup.

The senators – Kerry from Massachusetts, Edwards from North Carolina – were running even, according to early results. Fallen front-runner Howard Dean trailed far behind, his candidacy doomed.
