The Russians Came for All of Us

Yes, yes, let us concede that Donald Trump won so he is President. But Democrats should probably start conceding that Russia was vastly more interested in sowing chaos here than in having Trump be President. If they could finally admit what a terrible candidate Hillary Clinton was and what a terrible campaign she ran, they might finally realize the real danger of all of this. The Russians were not helping Trump. They were helping themselves. And based on what we know already, the Russians no more thought Trump would win than any of the rest of us did. And that makes it very likely they were also helping the Democrats.

It just seems extremely likely to me that Manafort was not alone. Perhaps this is where John Podesta’s brother comes in. The Russians were trying to advance their interests, such as Manafort working to get the GOP’s Ukraine position softened. The Russians also saw their interest as disrupting the American political process so we’d fight with each other instead of paying attention to them.

That worked marvelously.

But Putin is not one to just place a bet on one side. He plays both sides and profits no matter who wins, or at least he tries to. Yes, it is true, one campaign had a campaign manager who seems to have been in Russia’s pocket. The other candidate did not. But there was a Podesta on the Democratic side.

The fact of the matter is the Russians came for all of us and the Trump supporters should be willing to concede the Russians are more the bad guys than Hillary Clinton and the Democrats. But the left needs to concede the same about Trump. Russia is the threat. And they were very successful at sowing discord and lies among American voters.

For me, the biggest question left is what other people out there are on Russia’s payroll — and that’s a question for both sides, not just Trump.
