Tit For Tat

The Republicans think the Democrats have put a bunch of liberals on the Supreme Court who have taken to legislating from the bench, so the GOP decides to reciprocate by putting conservative justices on the Court to undo the damage. The Democrats respond by dragging out hearings and borking multiple nominees. The GOP responds by threatening to kill the filibuster. The Democrats respond by actually killing the filibuster for all but Supreme Court nominees. The GOP’s turn is next.

The Democrats believe George W. Bush vastly exceeded his authority as President and try to hold hearings, but cannot because the GOP controls Congress. The Democrats gain Congress, Rumsfeld is ousted, and hearings begin. The Democrats take the White House and think that George W. Bush did these things, so Obama can do these things too. Obama then decides to push the boundaries further. The GOP objects until the GOP gets the White House and pushes the boundaries even further.

The press take the cause of Bill Clinton, championing him. The Republicans respond by setting up counter-programming and exploding on talk radio. The Democrats push their own version of talk radio and fail so they pick back up the fairness doctrine. The fairness doctrine goes nowhere so the Democrats use outside groups to organize harassment efforts of talk radio advertisers. The Democrats cause their own talk radio shows to then go out of business, but drag down the value of talk radio overall so they consider it a win.

Meanwhile, conservatives respond by cleaning the left’s clock with Fox News and exposing repeated media biases in the media and the incestuous relationship between the media and Democrats. The public then begins to distrust the media in general because of those incestuous relationships and biases. Social media rises and people begin to trust their friends Facebook pages more than newspaper pages. Liars and cheats con people who post the cons as truth on Facebook thereby misleading their friends.

The Democrat-media incestuousness grows with the Obama Administration putting reporters into political positions and leftwing activist sites sending their writers into mainstream publications to pretend to be objective while shaping the news from a left-wing world view. The right responds by continuing exposing the efforts and growing its own right-wing alternatives. Breitbart becomes a response to the Huffington Post became a response to the Drudge Report. Jay Carney leaves Time to go be the Obama press secretary. Andy Lack turns MSNBC into a PR machine for the Democrats to counter Fox. Steve Bannon jumps ship from Breitbart temporarily to rearrange deck chairs on the S.S. Trump after leading a parade of horribles about left-wing media bias. The next major news executive to do a Bannon will be even more explicit and will help the left. After all, they will say, Bannon and the right established the precedent.

Neither side ever steps back and thinks maybe it shouldn’t take the next step because if it doesn’t take the next step, it loses. The tit for tat eventually takes the nation to the brink where the two major party choices are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. But neither side can help itself because neither side is willing or even able to declare a time out and walk back from the brink.

This is why the founders were suspicious of political parties. This is why the Founders wanted checks and balances. And this is why the federal judicial system really has to be reined in. But it cannot be reined in because that would mean both sides would have to fight at the state level and embrace federalism and differences an heterogenous cultures spread out across the nation.

So Campaign 2016 is not as bad as it will get. It is the beginning of it getting worse.
