N.H. Sen. Kelly Ayotte is in trouble. Her 6 point lead over Democrat Maggie Hassan has evaporated, with the polls split. Ayotte is still showing a slight lead, with the respected WMUR/UNH poll giving her a 3 point edge.
But wow, Ayotte is caught in a terrible pickle.
As early as March, Democrats started painting her with a Trump-colored brush. One would think that would help her, given how The Donald swept the state primary. But remember, New Hampshire is expected to break to Clinton–there’s a definite liberal streak running through the Granite State.
The full picture of dimness for Ayotte became apparent in late June, showing that she’s in the “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” boat with Trump. Get too close to Trump, and max out at under 30 percent support. Get too far from Trump, and…well, this just happened.
Donald Trump turned his ire Tuesday to US Senator Kelly Ayotte, a Republican who has attempted to distance herself from the GOP nominee while facing a difficult re-election battle in New Hampshire.
In an interview with The Washington Post, the Republican presidential nominee went off on Ayotte, who has said she would support — but not endorse — Trump for November’s election.
“New Hampshire is one of my favorite places,” Trump told the Post. “You have a Kelly Ayotte who doesn’t want to talk about Trump, but I’m beating her in the polls by a lot. You tell me. Are these people that should be representing us, okay? You tell me.”
Apparently, Trump prefers Democrat Hassan to represent him. And he’s wrong (or lying) about the polls.
“I don’t know Kelly Ayotte,” Trump told the Post. “I know she’s given me no support — zero support — and yet I’m leading her in the polls. I’m doing very well in New Hampshire. We need loyal people in this country. We need fighters in this country. We don’t need weak people. We have enough of them. We need fighters in this country. But Kelly Ayotte has given me zero support, and I’m doing great in New Hampshire.”
Trump is losing in New Hampshire. He has never led Clinton in a single poll. Ever.
So Trump will lose N.H., and simultaneously help a popular–albeit moderate–Republican to lose with him, so a Democrat can win that seat. There’s Trump unity for you. I only hope Ayotte is able to hang on, or that Trump becomes so toxic that his attacks actually help her.
Yay, Republicans, you really made the right choice when you nominated Cheeto Bozo Jesus.
