Of course Donald Trump veered–swerved, spun, and J-turned–on immigration. That’s always been his strategy, to out-Hillary Hillary.
Univision reported that U-Turn Donald made the flip-flop on immigration in a meeting with hispanic leaders.
“Trump is aware that he cannot deport 11 million people,” says Lola Zinke, wife of Ryan Zinke, a Republican congressman from Montana, who is a former Navy Seal.
Trump told the group of conservative Hispanic leaders he would announce a plan to grant legal status “that wouldn’t be citizenship but would allow them to be here without fear of deportation.” said Monty.
The campaign has so far not provided details of the plan, and Trump spokesman Steven Cheung, said in a statement that Trump’s posiiton remains unchanged on immigration.
Trump’s position (you know, deport all the illegals, and build a wall, and have Mexico pay for it) is unchanged, except for the fact that he’s not going to deport them, he might not build the wall, and Mexico might not pay for it. Other than that, it’s unchanged.
In May, Trump crushed his own tax plan. I wrote then, “Of course. Everything is negotiable. The wall, Iran, ISIS immigration, the minimum wage, all of it.”
“Sure, it’s a change. I’m allowed to change. You need flexibility, George, whether it’s a tax plan, where you’re going — where you know you’re going to negotiate. But we’re going to come up with something. But my real minimum wage is going to be — I’m going to bring companies back into this country, and they’re going to make a lot more than the $15 even,” Trump said.
Back in February I noted that Trump’s only possibility of winning involved him pivoting to the left of Hillary, into the “paranoid frontier.”
Trump knows he has to veer left to become president.
Not being the real thing as a conservative, the only truthful thing Trump has said was that he can change into whatever he wants. The more Trump can make his campaign about campaigning, not about actual issues, the better he can deflect the most damaging attacks against him–because they use his own words.
I have personally divested myself of the burden of caring about this race. It’s between Dumb and Dumber, or Corrupt and Corrupter, or Dangerous and Dangerouser, or Liberal and Liberaler at this point. So I’m now simply watching with amused interest as Trump does exactly what Trump has to do: make s**t into Shinola, spread it on a sandwich, and call it delicious.
As for conservatives, I said it best in February.
But Trump won’t care, because he isn’t one of us to begin with. As Egon Spengler said about another New York changeling, Gozer the Gozerian: it’s whatever it wants to be.
