President Trump has been criticizing the media for claiming that “17 intelligence agencies” claimed that Russia meddled in the Presidential election.
The President says only three or four claimed that. The President, for his part, said yesterday he thinks Russia did meddle. But the media keeps claiming 17 agencies concluded this.
Today at the Washington Post, Erik Wemple notes the President is right and the media, Hillary Clinton, and the fact checkers are wrong.
Trump spoke the truth. The January intelligence-community assessment of Russian meddling stemmed from the findings of three agencies: the FBI, the CIA and the National Security Agency. It was published by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Though the ODNI represents all of the various 17 intelligence agencies and elements in the U.S. government, not each one of those agencies contributed intelligence to the report.
You will note, please, that the media ran with the “17 intelligence agencies” line because Hillary Clinton said it. In fact, PolitiFact listed Clinton’s claim as true. But it turns out it was not true despite every major media outlet repeating the lie.
I wonder if Politifact will now retract this as they had to do with claiming “you can keep your doctor” was true. I’m sure they will use weasle words if they do.
