Vice President Pence Triggers Poor Notre Dame Students

Students at Notre Dame staged a protest during the Vice President’s commencement speech over the weekend. Dozens of students, many of whom were covered in rainbow regalia, walked out when Vice President Mike Pence began speaking. It didn’t seem to effect Pence, as he continued delivering his speech, calling for free speech on college campuses and decrying free speech zones.

The walkout, which was planned days in advance, was in response to Pence’ stance on marriage, immigration, and his support of President Donald Trump. According to USAToday, a Notre Dame student associated with WeStandforND issued the statement,

“The participation and degree-conferring of VP Pence stand as an endorsement of policies and actions which directly contradict Catholic social teachings and values and target vulnerable members of the University’s community,”

If you don’t have an occasional lecturer that challenges your beliefs, from the left or right, your education has failed you. I sat through literal communist propaganda in college, and I never staged a walkout. Grown adults should accept the fact that people will disagree with them, and they will probably disagree on some major issues. It is a fact of life. What are these college grads going to do if they find out their boss is pro-life? Or what if they have a co-worker that believes in Biblical marriage? The job market is a tough place, but it will be especially tough if they lack the mental fortitude to interact with people of opposing philosophical views. Setting all of that aside, this walkout is still completely and utterly ridiculous.

These students, at a Catholic institution, are protesting the Vice President of the United States because he believes in the Biblical definition of marriage. Let that sink in for a moment. Why did these students go to Notre Dame to begin with? Are they not aware of the official Catholic stance on marriage? Pence doesn’t even have the authority to effect federal policy regarding marriage, but his ideas simply cannot be tolerated by the left. It’s complete and total nonsense. Beyond that, the students have the gall to accuse Donald Trump and Mike Pence of holding values which “directly contradict Catholic social teachings and values.”

I like to think I am pretty well open to opposing views, but social justice warriors never cease to amaze me. In this case, it seems like a rather obvious publicity stunt, but it still defies logic and common sense. I really am getting tired of the perpetual state of protest. I think I need to go eat some Chick-fil-a.
