Welcome Back, Plessy! Harvard Embraces Segregation

History is being made this year at Harvard University. For the first time since the school was founded 400 years ago as an institution to train ministers to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Harvard has approved a racially segregated graduation ceremony. Welcome back, Plessy.

Now, of course, this bizarre addition to Harvard’s commencement exercises is not being done at the behest of old, white male trustees. If that were the case the protests would be immense. Instead it is being done by a group of approximately 125 black students who will participate in both the main Harvard commencement, and the additional blacks-only commencement/reception.

Michael Huggins, one of the black students participating, explains why:

“At this graduation, we can show each other and the administration that we are here, we are strong and we are not going away.”

What does this even mean? Isn’t graduating from Harvard itself an accomplishment and a sign of success? And how can a man as educated as Huggins believe that the administration is trying to destroy people like him when he’s preparing to walk across an Ivy League stage with an advanced degree? Not that Huggins is alone in this nonsense.

Another Masters candidate set to graduate, Courtney Woods, expressed dismay that somehow Harvard has been in existence for four centuries, yet has never segregated the races for graduation before. Seriously:

“It speaks volumes… Harvard’s institutional foundation is in direct conflict with the needs of black students. There is a legacy of slavery, epistemic racism and colonization at Harvard, which was an institution founded to train rising imperialist leaders. This is a history that we are reclaiming.”

Unsurprisingly, Woods is capable of citing no actual examples of racism on campus. Instead she makes an absurd academic appeal to a “legacy” of past offenses that have been so debilitating, so devastating, so incapacitating to black students like Woods that she is receiving a graduate degree from one of the country’s most prestigious universities.

What’s sadly ironic, of course, is that the real legacy of racism in the country is one that includes slavery’s obnoxious cousin segregation. Separating people strictly on the basis of their skin color is inherently unjust and logically unproductive for diverse nations.

Yet that is precisely what Harvard, Stanford, Temple, and Columbia Universities are promoting. It’s the societal degeneration being fostered by regressive liberalism. And while it’s no surprise to see it infecting our college campuses, the rest of us have the responsibility to call it out and subject it to the mockery and disgrace it deserves.
